I was so lucky to have T. Colin Campbell (the guru of nutrition) near my hometown so I got to hear him speak recently. What an honor! In case you didn’t know, he did the most comprehensive nutrition study ever conducted and wrote a book about it called The China Study (which I got autographed! Score!)
One of the most important findings of the study (in my opinion) is that cancer genes can be turned on and off when rats were fed a protein called casein which is found in milk. So, really, if you think about it, when you drink milk you turn on the cancer gene, when you don’t, you turn the cancer gene off. Let’s get real…milk does NOT do a body good even though that is what the Dairy Council would like you to believe.
One thing I really respect about T. Colin Campbell is that he does meticulous research and when the findings don’t show what is in the mainstream thinking, he goes against the mainstream. He grew up on a dairy farm and his family were dairy farmers. Can you imagine what he thought when he learned how horrible milk was? But he didn’t back down and hide his research. He told the truth despite his family’s ties to the business. That couldn’t have been easy. In fact, I am now reading Whole, another of his books, and he talks about how he was marginalized by others in his profession because his research didn’t agree with the current thinking about nutrition. Kudos to Dr. Campbell for sharing his knowledge about the best way to maintain a healthy body.
Here are some of the highlights from his talk:
He said that all cancer starts as a mutated gene, but it is controlled by nutrition not by genes. Cancer can be prevented and reversed with the proper nutrition.
When we eat animal protein, it turns off the mechanism in our body to kill cancer cells. Our body has so much power to heal itself if it has the right tools. Animal protein takes away those tools. Plant proteins help fight off the cancer cells to give your body the tools it needs to fight cancer, so eat something green today!
Animal protein promotes disease formation and plant protein reverses disease formation.
A whole foods plant-based diet prevents a broad range of illnesses and disease AND treats existing illness and disease.
Many people believe that environmental toxins are causing much of the cancer. However that diverts attention away from the real story. Yes, that probably happens, but when you fill your body with animal protein your body can’t fight back. It can on a whole foods plant-based diet.
A whole foods plant based diet does more good for the body than all the pills and medical procedures combined.
If you are at all interested in getting healthy through nutrition I recommend reading either of the books above. The China Study can be a little hard to read. I am finding Whole much more reader friendly and he discusses similar topics to The China Study. Can you imagine how much healthier we would be if these books were required reading for all doctors? Perhaps they would be pushing broccoli and brussel sprouts instead of Metformin and Lipitor.
His son also spoke at this talk. He is heading up program called Healing America Together. Click HERE to see their website. This is an opportunity to get involved in the plant based movement. If you are thinking about transitioning to a whole foods plant-based diet, it is good to have support from like-minded people as you try to navigate in this meat centered world.
