The garden is plentiful with tomatoes this year. We bought 9 plants and they are all producing quite well. I have already canned enough soup for the year and I have frozen some sauce. Now its time to turn those red beauties into delicious juice that will be a healthy snack for the winter. Thank you, Mom, for the lesson! It’s hard to write out a recipe. It’s so simple but here goes. Wash and cut up as many tomatoes as you want. Add them to a large pan to cook. Cut up celery stalks, green pepper and onion and add them to the tomatoes. Cook until they are cooked through and boiling. You want to cook them enough to make the tomatoes very soft, but also for the flavors of the other veggies to come out into the juice. Put the veggies through a food mill and crank until all the juice comes out. …

How I Healed From Grief (Part 4)
Drumming, becoming more spiritual, and Reiki all helped me heal from the grief of losing my husband. The last thing I will share that helped me is journaling. It’s a very simple, yet powerful way to get the pent up anger, frustrations, and sadness onto paper and out of your system. Way back in my childhood I learned about the power of journaling. When I started (probably around the age of 11 or 12) I was going through a loss too — this time of a good friend. I felt very betrayed at this time. We were best friends and then we weren’t. I had no idea what I did or didn’t do to cause this friendship to end. I began writing about it and it really helped. I went through many pages and lots of tissues, but it helped me get out all the gunk floating around in my head. I still have those…

How I Healed From Grief (Part 3)
Time to share another way that helped me heal from grief. I have already discussed drumming and becoming more spiritual. If you missed those posts, here are the links: DRUMMING and SPIRITUAL. As I mentioned in my two previous posts, these two activities really helped me heal. Funny, I didn’t realize it at the time, but I do now. They both clearly helped me move forward. This was because they got me out of my head and heart, helped me meet new people, and provided me with something new to learn (which I love, because I am a life-long learner). Finding distractions from thinking about my loss was instrumental in helping me move through my grief. The third thing that helped me heal from grief was discovering and embracing Reiki. Reiki is a Japanese energy technique where the practitioners hands are placed lightly on a person so that universal life force energy can flow into…

How I healed from grief (Part 2)
Throughout most of my life — until about 40 or so — I was not religious or spiritual in any way shape or form. When I was somewhere between 10-12 years old, my mom and dad would take me to church and I would pout and refuse to go in. Eventually they gave up and let me stay home. As a high schooler, I was told about being born again and was basically frightened into joining my parent’s Lutheran church. I went to a presentation that told me rock lyrics were evil. I loved music and was now afraid to listen to it. I attended a movie whose premise is that if you don’t become born again, you will have your head cut off. I am not kidding! All these many years later, those images are still fresh in my mind. As a teen, I caved under the pressure and I attended classes at my…
